Hello everyone, and happy new year! I haven’t posted in a while as we have been at our holiday house in Port Alfred having some quality family time.

Summer on the river means endless swimming, water sports and sun tanning. For those with naturally dry and curly hair, you will understand the struggle associated with this- extremely dry and frizzy hair! The fact that the tap water in Port Alfred is brackish (salty) water, doesn’t help with this either. Washing your hair with brackish water is terrible, the shampoo doesn’t foam and your hair is left feeling dry no matter how much conditioner you use.

This is what inspired my first blog post for 2018: a family friend came to visit us in Port Alfred last week, and we spent the afternoon swimming in the river. After swimming, she started rubbing hair product into her and her 9 year old daughter’s hair- who has the exact same curls as mine. Curious, I checked out the tub which reads: Aunt Jackie’s Defining Curl Custard, and asked her if I could try some in my hair. I have tried multiple leave-in conditioners and hair oils but nothing compares to this!

The product is NOT tested on animals (yay), it’s sulfate-free, paraben-free and contains no mineral oil or petroleum. Sulfate can have a stripping effect on natural hair which removes your hair’s essential oils and worsens the problem of dryness, so the fact that it’s sulfate-free is great for people with dry hair. All preservatives used in this product are eco-friendly too.

It has the most amazing texture- not sticky, thick or creamy like all of the others that I have tried. It’s not so rich that it leaves residue in your hair and it smells absolutely AMAZING! Bonus- it is so much more reasonable than most curly hair products- a tub sells at Clicks for R65.95. I have used it on my hair when it was both wet and dry, but I find that it works better when my hair is wet. When my curls dry they form tight ringlets that look like GHD curls, and there is minimal frizz. Here is a photo of when I put it on my wet hair, and how my hair looked a few hours later when it dried.

I highly recommend this product for people with naturally curly hair- especially if you struggle with frizz and/or dryness. Give me a shout if you try it, and let me know what you think.
